Rebecca Humphrey

May 6, 1932 — January 9, 2026

    1. As the cook lovingly prepared the final course and set the table for the day, so was the same with our beloved Rebecca Humphrey, the matriarch of the Jones and Humphrey family ~ she slept quietly away on Friday, January 9, 2026 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

  1. It is with utmost humility and deference to the divine that we announce the transition of Rebecca Humphrey. She gracefully answered the master's call, bidding farewell to this mortal realm and embarking upon his eternal journey.

  2. "Reflections of Life"

  3. Rebecca Countryman Jones Humphrey was born on May 6, 1932, in Graves Station, Georgia, to the parentage of Mose Countryman and Fair Lily Barnum Countryman. From humble beginnings, she grew into a woman whose life was marked by faith, resilience, service, and a love that was most often expressed through a warm meal and an open heart.

Affectionately known as Becky, she received her early education at Walker Chapel A.M.E. Church, a small church school in Graves Station. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and united with Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served for many years as an usher and choir member. Her commitment to God and the church remained a steady foundation throughout her life.

Rebecca’s journey led her beyond Graves Station when she married Willie G. Jones and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Upon returning home, she later married Rev. Lester M. Humphrey, continuing a life rooted in faith and family. Through every season, Rebecca remained a devoted provider, always determined to ensure her family was cared for.

A true working woman, Rebecca supported her household in many ways. In her early years, she took in laundry, practiced as a cosmetologist, and worked at the Town and Tourist Restaurant. She also served as domestic help during a critical time in the movement for equality, quietly contributing to progress through honest labor and perseverance. After retiring, she turned her lifelong passion for cooking into Becky’s Catering Service—a labor of love that fed not just bodies, but souls. Her kitchen became a gathering place, her meals a ministry, and her hands a blessing to many.

Rebecca was a great cook, known far and wide for preparing wonderful meals that brought people together. She fed family, friends, church members, and strangers alike, never turning anyone away hungry. Her food carried comfort, tradition, and love—leaving memories that will long outlive the last plate served.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; her siblings: Willie J. Countryman, Rosa Graham, Redeather Jordan, David E. Countryman, Sammie L. Countryman, Eddie D. Freeman, Mose Countryman, and Richard Countryman; her children: Otis Humphries and Alonzo Jones; and her grandchildren: Ernest McDaniel, Tianna Edwards, Patrick Jones, Luther Humphries, Jr., Tokolio Rogers, Bernard McDaniel, and Teresa Holloway.

Rebecca leaves behind a rich legacy of love and family. Cherishing her memory are her children: Dea. Ernest Jones, Bertha J. Holloway, Luther Humphries, Dazell Humphries, Glenda (Curtis) Richardson, Kenneth Humphries, Anna Edwards, and Frederick (Princeanna) Humphries; her grandchildren: Patricia Jones, Angela (Andre) Baldwin, Victoria Jones, Stephanie (Andre) Jones, Gabriel (Kimberly) Pickett, Gary Stewart, Michael Jones, Marcus Jones, Kimberly Jones, Shamekia (Claude) Ware, Ruth (Dea. Rebecca Countryman Jones Humphrey lived a life of purpose, faith, and generosity. Though her kitchen may now be quiet, the love she poured into every meal and every life continues to nourish all who were blessed to know her.
